David Garland, formerly of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, was one of my inspirations to pursue graduate work in New Testament, and I even had the privilege of serving as his Garrett fellow for a semester. I still lean on his lecture notes whenever I’m teaching the parables, and fondly remember how he made Mishnah, Gemara, and beraitot come alive. He has just been named to an endowed chair at Truett Seminary.
Way to go, Dr. Garland!
