On the Jewish calendar, the year 5768 AM (Anno mundi, “year of the world”) begins tonight at sundown. Happy new year to all who are celebrating.
- There’s a nice meditation on Torah and Haftarah readings at Ancient Hebrew Poetry.
- Someone called Mariposabzzz has posted a Rosh Hashanah-Yom Kippur message from Rabbi Gershon Winkler.
- There is also a Georgia recipe for honey cakes, a traditional Rosh Hashanah treat, at Yo, Yenta!
L’shanah tovah!
Sundown also marks the beginning of the month of Ramadan on the Muslim calendar, in the year 1428 AH (Anno hegirae, “year of the hijra [emigration to Medina]“).
- Ramadan seems to be a time of year when interesting things happen in the spiritual plane.
- I know some missionaries in the Muslim world. Please pray for them, and for those among whom they minister. This daily prayer guide may be a helpful resource. While you’re at it, please say a prayer for those affected by today’s powerful earthquake in Indonesia.
- Regrettably, some intentional spiritual warfare praying may also be in order in the coming days.
Update: It turns out September 12, 2007 was also the first day of the year 2000 on the Ethiopian calendar. I don’t know how to say “Happy New Year” in Amharic, but I hope those celebrating will indeed have a happy and prosperous new year.
