It’s easy to criticize John Shelby Spong, which is why such criticisms are rarely very interesting. Not so, however, is Scott Stephens’ recent foray at Faith and Theology, in which he takes exception to Spong’s attempt to appropriate the legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bottom line: Spong is precisely the kind of “Christian” Bonhoeffer would have accused of compromising the gospel.
