Yes, But Can I Wear a Scapular?
Michael Bell, the Eclectic Christian, has stumbled upon Can I Wear Jeans? an interesting blog/web site where members are able to “rate” their churches with information a first-time guest might want to know before showing up — the kinds of things that don’t usually show up on church web sites.
Here is what I wrote about my church:
First Baptist Church of Christ
Macon, GA
http://www.fbcmacon.org
What’s the worship music like? Traditional hymns in great variety; choral anthems of the highest caliber.
What’s the speaking like? Relational but intellectually solid (as befits a “university church”). Expect some humorous stories and challenging life-application points. Don’t expect stuffiness, technological gimmicks, or overheated emotionalism.
What’s the childcare like? The best I have seen anywhere, any time. No exceptions. We joined this church largely on the strength of their children’s ministries and the church’s overall commitment to family life.
What’s your favorite thing? Everybody is involved in ministry! There are a variety of opportunities to serve through crisis closet, mission trips, various caring ministries, etc. Children are often heard reading Scripture in worship. Ph.D.’s are often invited to teach elective classes in Bible, theology, church history, etc. If you can’t find a way to use your gifts, you just aren’t trying.
What would you change? More frequent communion; more liturgy; a wider variety of music, including spirituals, gospel songs, and international praise music.
Can I wear jeans? Yes. Most people dress up. Some men wear jackets and ties but not all, and certainly not during the summer! Some women wear pants instead of skirts or dresses. But I honestly cannot imagine anyone looking askance if someone showed up in jeans.

Sounds like you’re happy and with good cause. But the “Can I wear jeans?” thing did make me smile. We have people show up in jeans regularly — one of them is also a smoker, which I hear isn’t done in some churches. (She does the smoking outside on the benches, not in the sanctuary.) A couple of people often show up in knee-length shorts. One of our teenagers wears his hair past his shoulder.
I love that about our church.
I did a quick, non-scientific survey this morning and spotted one pair of jeans (on a choir member!) and about six polo shirts
Oh. I am so going to church next week in a scapular!
More liturgy? You ARE a platypus.
