Just catching up here, and when I read, "Scholarly sources are to be favored over “devotional” ones. I teach content-heavy academic courses, not touchy-feely spiritual formation stuff" I laughed. Why? Because I remembered something from a Sys. Theo I class that I found astounding at the time and couldn't help but now think of how Professor Pursiful might have responded. We had been assigned a term paper of some sort and also were asked to give a brief oral summary of it and our sources. 'Twas much too long ago to remember the topic, but it was, after all, a theology class. One very young student stood up to give his summary. It was pretty pathetic, and I recall Ken and I (who happened to be taking the class together) rolling our eyes at each other behind our books...but the worst was yet to come. His main source was--ready? THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER! I was shocked, but the professor kept a straight face.
