Christian Appropriation of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible

Peter Enns takes several large steps toward an understanding of how and why the first Christians read the Bible (= the Jewish Scriptures) as they did.

The force behind the “appropriation” of the Hebrew Bible on the part of the NT writers was not a matter of “watch me convince you of my better way of handling the Bible,” as if it were some academic exercise. What drove the first Christians to appropriate the Hebrew Bible as they did was not simply an attempt to set up an alternative interpretive grid to compete with Jews of the day and to see who wins. What drove the first Christians to do what they did with the OT was their experience of the crucified and risen Son of God.
