These wise words from Ken Schenck will almost certainly turn up in a lecture or on a syllabus in the near future—and I’m teaching college freshmen! Consider it the least you need to know about the difference between exegesis and eisegesis:
- A seminary graduate should be able to tell the difference between what one biblical text says and what another biblical text says and be able to distinguish between the two.
- A seminary graduate should be able to tell the difference between what a text actually says and interpretations that fill in gaps left by the text.
- A seminary graduate should know when they are reading a text “more than literally” and when they are reading it in its plain sense.
See Ken’s post for examples.
