What John 3:16 Actually Says

Joel Hoffman explains the Greek grammar of John 3:16.

Little known fact (if you didn’t study Greek at SBTS during the James Blevins era): The Greek text of John 3:16 can be sung to the tune of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Which is both a neat way to memorize the verse in Greek and an apt theological commentary on its meaning.

  1. Are you sure about the “What a Friend” bit? I tried it, and it worked OK for the first four lines (although two of them ended with “ho”). After that it required breaking words across lines, and the end of the verse just didn’t fit the tune. Did I miss something?
